About a year ago we installed porcelain tile in our kitchen. We have never done this before so we had grout haze really bad. I cleaned with vinegar and water and then was told to try phosphoric acid I did that and after a lot of scrubbing I thought I got the haze off. The other day I was telling a friend of mine about my tiles and how I still did not think the haze was all off because I do not think my tiles feel clean, and she said they justed Muratic acid and washed their tiles. Well we have a pool and had some muratic acid so I diluted it really well and tried it on few tiles. My rinse water was the dirtiest water I had ever seen. So now what? Do I have to wash all the tiles? The acid scares me but my husband is willing to try it if that is what we need to do. Stonetech has some products that they say will work and I have also been told to go to a brick place and get something there to clean the tiles. I have read your forum and I know Muriatic acid is the last resort but the fact my rinse water was so dirty I am afraid this is my only option. Thanks for any input.

Hi Carrla, Welcome! :)

I do not recommend using muriatic acid. There are some brick cleaning detergents that are much safer properly diluted. They are still a blend of acids. If its convenient to go to the brickyard, give it a shot. One product that may be available is Detergent 600 by Prosoco. Make sure it is properly diluted (whatever product you choose), and followed by thorough rinsing.

Do a test 1st! Make sure you let it dry before proceeding. Sometimes a rinse with diluted ammonia is also needed.

Usually, you need to prewet the tile and grout. Apply the chemical, let it dwell on surface (without drying), agitate with brush, remove (wet vac is the best), double rinse.
