What should we look for, Kathleen wants to scan photos, I want it for text, some photos. DPI?

As long as I'm on the subject-digital cameras, how do they hook up to the PC?

Scanner- dunno. Went to Wallyworld and picked up a cheap one to see if I'd use it. Nope....

Camera- Mine has a cord plugged into the back of the tower, with an open end that looks like a headphone. Just plug in the camera and download the pics when its full. Easy, just need to just some rechargable batteries, 'cause the camera eats 'em.

Scanner. Get a cheapo and take it from there. Be careful when installing the software, though. I dumped my system once installing a Visioneer scanner. I've got a cheap HP now.

Downloading pics from the digital cam. They all come with a cable or a couple cables to plug the cam into the computer. Unless the cable is USB, it's a waste of time and batteries.

Get a "reader" that plugs into the computer (hopefully, with a USB connection). You put the Sandisk or CompactFlash card into the reader. It's quick -- no batteries.

And yes, digital cams eat batteries. Buy a charger and three sets of rechargeable batteries (12). Watch for sales. You can get the whole set-up for about $40.

Be real careful with HP scanners if you are running Windows ME. Don't know why. Don't seem anybody else knows why. Just doesn't have the drivers in the program. They (HP or Windows, whoever does that) keep publishing patches, which sometimes work and sometimes don't. I have an HP that works fine with my laptop running 98, made it work sorta for a while with a patch on ME, now it doesn't work at all.

Know several people who use Visionere (sp?) cheapos and they do just fine. Afixin' to get one for myownself.

One digital camera I've used had 3.5 floppies for an available medium and that's what I used. Easy. Just take out the diskette, pewt it inna computer, grab the pictures, pewt it back inna camera. Not much storage space, but fine for my purposes. Current camera has a 16meg storage thingee and a USB cord to download. Takes more pichers, still real easy to download.

Both cameras used dedicated, proprietary rechargeable batteries. Lasted long time. Carry one spare. Maybe not enough for people who take a whole gaggle of photos, but plenty good for moi.

My opinion; worth price charged.
