View Full Version : Corner Shelf for Tiled Shower?

Now that we're finished tiling our master shower, I've been on the lookout for some corner shelves to hold our shampoo bottles and whatnot. So far, I haven't been very impressed with what I have seen.
I'm curious if there is any easy way to cut a 12" tile diagonally and mount it in the corner of our shower? I realize this would have been easier to do when we were tiling the shower, but...
Maybe a screw-on mounting clip of some type?
I've seen the "Better Bench" items that you attach to the wall, fill with mortar, and tile over. But, those are a little larger (thicker) than I'm wanting, and a lot more work than I was hoping for.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Anthony

There's some corian shelves but all the corner shelves I know of are suppose to go in as you are tiling. The tile holds it in place.

Our plan has been to use the wire type of shelving that simply screws to the wall. Easy to install and drains easily. Unfortunately, there aren't many options, usually just chrome or white. Neither go with our color scheme. I did find one in a bright brass, but we were hoping for an antique brass or rust colored finish.
While I was doing some searching this morning, I ran across some glass corner shelves that had mounting strips that somehow screwed to the wall. That's what made me wonder if there was a similar way to cut pieces of matching tile and have them mount in the same way.
The "Better Bench" shelves, like the BT-17 at http://aquafit-usa.com/stock_mats.htm would be a workable option if they weren't so thick (2"!). It would be nice if there was a simple metal shelf I could cover with a piece of tile.
I'll keep hunting...

What i do is ,if i have 18" stone cut it diagonal and laminate the two halves finish sides out with akemi or equivalent mastic then angle grind 2-3 grooves in the side to accommodate pennies inserted halfway, then line it up to wall where you want and angle grind corresponding slots in joint or stone walls and akemi them in and finish with caulk or grout. If all i have is 12" i akemi 2 whole pieces finish side out then hand draw a semicircle from one corner to the other forming a large half circle and sand the edge and insert the same way.

I just did the shelves like Dave's couple days ago. I laminated 2 halves which were cut diagonally from the 12" marble. I bullnose them together, then slotted about 1" depth along the sides (from the right angle corner to about 1" from the diagonal edge) using the under cut tile saw. I found a couple hard plastic strips in my garage (I don't know what they for, but they quite tough and got about the right thickness). With the plastic strips in the slots with about 1/4" sticked out, I slided these self-made shelves into the corner grout lines. Everything was glued together with 100% Si caulk.
I did not thought of the pennies trick like Dave :( I was going to use right angle metal brackets or similar instead of plastic, but afraid it is going to rust. It is only the shear force on these strips so I think plastic will hold... if not, it is easy enough to replace :)
