Sigh....I need some help. My updated webpage is parked in my 'puter, ready to go. My host has updated, and no longer supports "Web Publishing Wizard". (Too simple, I suppose...)

So- what to do? My web page is in Publisher(2000). I have a fairly recent version of Front Page, but I'm not sure how that helps. I guess I need a new FTP?

Taking any and all (reasonably cheap) solutions...

Well I am not familiar with Publisher..I just graduated from using Notepad for making pages about a month ago myself to a program called 1stPage.

But basically all you need to do is upload a txt file with an HTML extension and upload any linked pictures as well and make sure the are all stored in the folder on the web host.

If you can't do this through Publisher then just copy the html txt(or source page) of the new page you built and paste it into a Notepad document. Then just change the documents name and extension to whatever.html and you should be fine.

You might have to make sure the links in the page are pointed in the right direction also.

Need help let me know

That's the problem...the web site host doesn't support the way I know to upload. I need to learn some new tricks.

Well, my host wants me to use an updated version of Frontpage Extension Server thingie whatis. Or use something different altogether, which sounds (somewhat...) easier to me.

Or, perhaps, I could find a nice, outdated host that lets me use what I know. I didn't have any problem uploading to the freebie site at Yahoo....

JC

Try the frontpage site.

I don't care how your host wants to do it. There are certain things that are against the laws of man and nature.

Aside: CX, I must be slipping, that went right by me.

all right- new simpler question-for those of you that have a site-

How do you get your info from your 'puter to the web?

I feel like I must just be missing something major here. This frustrates me. http://www.smilies-world.de/Smilies/nichtani/lightblueside.gif I think I'll just cook.

I figured John would answer you but he must be recuperating.

I have a site but I haven't got a clue how it got there. My tech guy "your ISP giving you routing numbers, as soon as he gives me them gobbledegook, mumble-mumble, can't do it"

My computer doesn't host it so I don't worry about it.

JC

I go to a page backdoor page that is passworded and it has software that includes a 'browse' button that lets me select the files that I want to upload. I select the files and upload everything in to that folder. I simply place everything in the same folder and make sure the links all point the right directions.

Hey, JC, is backdoor page the name of a program, part of your host services, what?

I'm going for one or two more days of trying to figure this out before I give up and get a different host.

(One of these days I'll learn html. Still working on translating Texan, though.)

no backdoor page is just a term I used for a web address they gave me.Or rather an administration page.(backdoor to the site..)

Cami,

I run this site on Front Page 2000, and it's about the last Microsoft editor that most hosts will allow.

If you have Front Page loaded on your machine you can "import" any web page into it, including web pages made with Publisher. (I started out with Publisher and graduated.) You'll need to buy Front Page 2000 for Dummies. (I have trouble reading it myself). :D

You could go to another ftp client (and I use one on the side) but I would recommend that you re-build the site from scratch using Front Page. You don't have a lot of pages yet. It'll be easy. Layout your new pages in FP, and then copy and paste your text. The ftp in FP is also called Publisher, but it works. Every host, as far as I know, now runs FP extensions.

When I ran my site out of Publisher, I didn't use that ftp anyway. I used another system that you can buy for $39.95. You can download a beta version for a month free. It's slow but user friendly. With it you could continue to use your current setup. Let me find it for you. Take a sec.

Here it is. Go to http://globalscape.com and look for Cute FTP.

Trying the different FTP route. Downloaded WS ftp last night, but I need a few hours of quiet to really play around with it and go through the tutorial. Maybe during Jacob's afternoon nap...

Caution:whining ahead- strictly optional reading.

But I don't wanna transfer everything to front page. I put in lots more photos and built a spiffy little links page and generally wasted time for a couple of weeks. Next time I'll learn front page, really, I swear...

(Whine over. Bring on the cheese.)

I apparently didn't express myself correctly. You CAN merely import your current pages into Front Page and publish right out of Front Page to your current ftp site. It's very simple IF you get the dummy book. FP is about a hundred times more dynamic than Publisher.

Quit whining!

What about this one? Will this work.

War FTP I've used this before to let folks download games/programs off my PC. It is the nicest one I found.

Cami A

Ok- figured out how to get files into FP. However, I'm biting the bullet and replacing my Windows95 (yes, 95!) and other antiquated items(like FP) over the next few days. If I don't come back, I've blown up the 'puter...

OIC. You are updating your dinosaur. :D

Cami A
02-14-2002, 01:08 PM
Sooo...the upgrade went fairly smooth. I got to replace my modem- never actually opened up the tower before. Needed to be cleaned, anyhow.

The modem and Windows were circa 1995, and Windows was upgraded last in 1998. Updated to a larger moniter and more memory last spring so I have enough memory to surf the 'net. Today my moniter dies. Yesterday my new digital camera (Xmas) bit the dust. Is this the technology gods at work, or what?

Squintingly yours, back on the 15 inch.

What happened to the camera and what mfr was it?

Cami A
02-14-2002, 01:44 PM
It's an hp 215. When you turn on the camera, the thunderbolt flashes while it's warming up, then stops to indicate that it's ready to take a picture. Or it used to stop... Now it just keeps flashing. I used the adapter, thinking maybe the batteries were low. Nope. Reformatted the memory card. Nope. Left the batteries out and reset evrything up. Nope. I'm taking it back next week, but I'll probably get another one. I like the pictures it takes, and the options available on it, I just want it to work....Nope!

I think the HP cams are good. I like Olympus better because they have the integrated lens covers.

So, how you doin' on updating the site?

I was resistant to upgrading from 2000 but glad I did. It's very friendly and the new extensions are simply marvelous.

Cami A
02-22-2002, 01:31 PM
Ok, ok...sat down and forced myself to go through the learning curve for FP2002. The first version (http://www.mackinawcityembers.com) is up. Now I have to get rid of the horrible music (how did that get in there? :D), fix some links, and clean up some things so the pages open up quicker. The winter sunset on the front page was from last night.

Next project: making my 'puter the fax machine.....

Had to put the sheep thing on there, didn't you?

Hey, it might be the way I have my display set (been foolin' with it) but your pictures look a little grainy. Maybe it's just me.

Ken and Cami,

I didn't know they had a 2002. I'm still on 2000. Are the new extensions more server friendly than the older ones? If I upgrade will my host quit bitching about FP?

Cami A
02-22-2002, 04:01 PM
Yes, John, I had to put the sheep in there...but only you guys (and Sharon) will get the joke. :D

So far, 2002 seems fairly user friendly. Haven't used 2000 in almost a year, so I would have had to learn everything over again anyhoo. Extensions are nice; don't know about your host...

I'll check the pics. Could have went too far in my effort to make them quick to download. Gues they'd look really bad for AOHell users, hmmm?

Ken Frango
02-22-2002, 04:41 PM
cami, I like your site. Your pictures at 140k+ are large for their dimensions though. GIF's are limited to 16 colors and are mainly for text and graphics, similar to your logo. Jpeg format displays millions of colors (no grainy effect) and are primarily for photos. Text tends to look sloppy in jpeg. They'll also be about 1/5th the file size compared to gifs. You can control the compression too. Even create thumbnails that link to a larger version.

Keep an eye on the download time, (bottom right hand corner of FP2002) I think at 56K and under 60 secs you're ok.

John, I called my host and said get the 2002 extensions or I'm moving. Twenty minutes later they sent me an email that said they were loaded to the server. Simple links & navigation bars, photogallery set up & enhanced publishing information are just a few of the new features. I bought the new install instead of the upgrade, twice the price at $170 but well worth it. It's no dreamweaver but it's still a feature rich program.

I know a few like to swim against the tide but when it comes to microsoft compatability and familiarity between programs...well when you need to get work done, it's so much more productive. I'm running 2000pro and all my ms programs run seamlessly. I couldn't get this thing to crash if I hit it with a sledge.

I think aol is using a version of Internet Explorer now, which is what I'm using. (Too chicken to try one of those off-breed browsers). But I've recently fiddled with the settings, so it may just be me.

Does anyone else see problems with Cami's home page pictures?

Ok, no more music...pics are now downloading much quicker now that they are not all one big gif...

Cami A
02-23-2002, 07:09 AM
Kelly, you made me laugh while I was drinking the morning java-kinda burns your nostrils...

Was that music(and I use thaat term loosely) in my first site? God, I hope not...I almost always have the mute button on when surfing.

Jim, you must not have heard the dirge that was playing, or you wouldn't request any more musical selections. :D With all the college kids working in town, the music should be "Smoke on the Water"...

Just hired two kids from Belarus to work here this summer- if they work out like the four we had from Latvia, it'll be great.

JC, I still can't get your link to work. :(
Did you ever get "Expressions", or is everything still on hold?

JC
02-23-2002, 03:23 PM
Still on hold, my partner is taken care of it, have not talked to him in awile to see whats going on.
Expressions is taken can't use it . We came up with another name they said was not taken but until all the legal stuff is done with I am refraining from using it. I will let you guys know when I am sure about it. thx
