View Full Version : Logo
Ok the site is slowly getting closer. Spent the last few days messing around with a logo/name(graphic programs are so complicated these days). Got one up but still think it needs something..need to finish the logo with perhaps a little picture in it or something..I dunno it is just not right.
Managed to redirect the site out of the frame they had me in and set up an email/comment page.
If someone has time stop in and leave a suggestion in the comment form or email.

Jim, sent you an email via your page, not sure it went. Anyhow the logo "Specs" ? is that it?
yea, i havent checked my mailbox today but thats kinda the name I am thinking about..still getting feedback. Also I am going to try and draw some of those blueprint arrows on the logo somehow to spice it up a little and give it some continuity.
Too busy raising heck over at the FI forum today to get to it though.
Bud and a couple others suggested a more 'old world craftsman scheme' would work better. Perhaps that is possible also. It sucks having a partner in times like these cuase they guy is hard to get ahold of for feedback..still trying till then I am held up with it.
Ok I changed it a little..wondering if I should change where it says "effects" to "flooring".
http://bal.ifloor.com/files/45/Links.html
JC:
Meant to comment earlier and just forgot.
That logo just doesn't say anything about flooring to me. At a glance, I would have guessed some kind of machine tooling operation.
Adding the word "flooring" would certainly help, but not enough, think I.
my opinion; worth price charged.

JC,
How many email addresses do you have now and which one actually works?
I feel the same way you do cx, But what I was thinking is to make the name unique figuring it would stick in peoples heads as an (alternative to the common Ted and Bobs Flooring stores).
Look at names like Xerox and many big names..they are not discriptive at all but everyone knows what they do.
Where I live there is a company called 'Homer Nine'..while it does'nt tell you who or what they do. They do residencial HVAC and well they are the best in this area(and almost twice the price as everybody else). There name is synonymous with quality..they do the homework stay up on the latest trends and get plenty of education. Now every customer that "wants the best" and is willing to spend the money calls them! They are maxed out with work..
This is the goal I am aiming at..This is the niche that is missing around here.
It may take longer to get that client base but if I don't I will be spending the rest of my life trying to compete against the 'over plywood' guys around here. And i'm too slow to do that.
Yea I read that link Cami gave me..can you tell.
The downside of this kinda name is that you have higher advertising cost. However I am hoping that word of mouth will be the main form of advertising so bieng overly discriptive would be overkill also the samples and such in the windows will give a clue also.
I want to change to flooring but what showers ,wirlpool decks and counter tops etc.. stuff that is not on the floor.
Anyone got another word to discribe this ? If not then "flooring" it is.

How about "precision surfacing"?
I like the dimensions and arrows on your logo- easy enough to make for a consistant feel on your ads, letterhead, etc.

I'm with CX and Cami and said that in the email I sent. I still think the old world craftsmanship is the way to go, if "J.Cordes Ltd" is not aceptable to Michael go with James Michael or Michael James Ltd. More later.
precision surfacing? hmmm
Thats wierd cause i was going to name it Precision something but that name is used in a couple of businesses here also and a friend of mine named his tile business Precision Installations but he moved to Cali so I was thinking of stealing that name(with his permision of course).
Jim there is already a "Heritage Place gallery of floors"
and Select Flooring that both use the old world theme around here. Besides I am just a young buck..after they see that the whole old world craftsman idea would be shattered as soon as they see me.
Besides I spent about 10 total how learning to layer, alias, render, convert images with these graphics programs and now the name "specs" has kinda grew on me.
However I have not had a chance to talk with Mike about it or check the ficticous names and domain names yet so that could very easily change.
Thanks Im goin to change the logo again tonight i'll post it here.

Jim pay attention godammit!:)
I'm suggesting you use your name or a combination of names.
I like your background "arrows" they look professional and impart a sense of planning, not Bob n Ray coming in a pick up and throwing the material in. They will also appeal to Archs. and Designers.
I think the word Hard will send the message "uncomfotable" to consumers. How about:
J.Cordes Ltd
Designer Surfaces
or
Distinctive Surfaces
Effects says nothing.
Don't forget Zerox spent millions on advertising to get that recognition and who knows how long it took Homer to build his reputation. Maybe the "Nine" represents failed companies.
[Edited by flatfloor on 01-21-2002 at 05:09 PM]
Designer surfaces......
I like that Jim..but do you think it is desciptive enough?
I see your point about the word 'hard'
1.Designer Surfaces Ltd.
2. Designer Surfaces
3.Designer Flooring&Surfaces
4.Designer Flooring Surfaces
5.Flooring&Surfaces by Design
6.Surfaces by Design
7.
Any of these catch your eye?
Cami I did'nt get any other mail since you said you would check what else could open that file...did you go through my site mail..if so it was down for awhile today..
The owner of the web hosting site was also the owner of forum and shut down the site in response to me hacking his web forum(well I was using a php code that was ran through his own servers via my site to do it to get passwords). However I quickly pointed out that he challenged me to do so first and I have no interest in comprimising his security and I promised I won't do it again so he gave me back my web site. All is well now and looking forward to your mail.thx
heres the e-mail

thats how you pre-filled out a email form in case your wondering about the hex symbols and text.It is pretty easy to do the %20 is the hex symbol for a 'space'.and the '?' goes right after the e-mail addy, the the subject=bla, bal, bal then use a '&' to separate the Body= and thats about it other then the mailto: symbol at the beginning..Also any "'" or"-" have other hex numbers that are availiable from hex charts.
Use html or ubb or vb script to put this in link form so all the charactors do not show. Since john does not have HTML we will do it in vb code.
E-mail me (mailto:jc1212@anonymous.to?Subject=heres%20the%20file&Body=Thank%20You%20for%20your%20help)

Which ones or what modifications?
Cami is the fonts in that top picture 'common fonts'like you said that can be used easily for stationary etc..
How about whipping one up that is like the top one but change to writing to "Surfaces&Flooring by Design" and put the achitectual arrows in it.. and keep everything else the same pretty much.
I am kinda partial to that one and the second one although the old world ones are nice too..I gotta show my partner these if I visits his office that is.

JC- all the fonts are standard fonts on Publisher, and all of 'em are "approved" for Web Publishing. (The one with the strange shadows and borders probably wouldn't work well for printing; it was more of an exercise in layout.)
I'll see what I can do with changing around the first one. You may have to do the dimension lines, but I'll put some plain blue one in so you get the idea.
Glad I can help- it only seems fair...
Ok, new ones are here. (http://www.geocities.com/not_working_at_all/page2.html) I see I messed up your wording, but it's easy enough to change. Now where are all those opinions when you need 'em?

Too late now to be serious, tomorrow
hehe Yea I will do the lines Cami..I like the shadow effect..even if it I have to remove it for stationary it should still work.
Have you tried to use Adobe Photoshop or Paint shop pro?
I have been useing Canvas 8 I like that one..
I will play with it tommorow a bit but I will probably have to start over so I can use layers etc..
What fonts are those so I know?
Also check out these fonts I found..they are really easy to install on your system..now if I was to use a one of these fonts would I have problems with printers working with it?
I don't know much about printers..

this is the program I like coz it has all these neat looking little drop boxes and makes those cute little arrows.

Jim, I purposely kept it simple just the facts, fast download. I'm thinking about jazzing it up but no rush. Nothing exciting about gray goop pouring out of a barrel even if it does have Pixie Dust.

JC- the font on "Specs" is Gill Sans Ultra Bold in italic. The font on the writing in the box is Arial Rounded MT Bold. The shadow on this design would be ok for the printers, unless you get the logo very small- I was refering to the big one towards the bottom of the page. Can you save the image on your 'puter, then post it to your site? Seems like it would be easier than starting from scratch, especially if your partner hasn't had a chance to look at any designs.
As far as printers, standard fonts are the easiest, but I have to admit now I do letterhead, fax cover sheets, quotes, etc, all from my PC. The only thing we use the printer for is business cards, but you may want to do scratch pads, pens, etc. I think you can also just give them a disk with your logo on it, if you do want to wander into some strange fonts. Publisher tells me when a font will not appear the same on everyone's browser, so I just stick with the ones everyone can see- still lots of choices, and simple is better for logos. (I know you're not fond of Microsoft things, but it is very easy...)

OK- more variations on the 2nd page. (http://www.geocities.com/not_working_at_all/page2.html)
I like it..The one that says "Stone, tile and wood instalations" is nice Maybe I should just have the sign say that instead of all the mystery stuff..going to send them over to the other half tonight for approval and editing possibly, I will let you guys know the outcome..he was in florida on vacation..funny story he had.
He was using the airport rental car(they give them to you free if you use there airport to refuel) and he made an illegal turn somewhere, the cops finding out he's a pilot searched him his plane, car for drugs etc..and fined him 500+ for the illegal turn, he did'nt have cash on him so they would not let him leave thinking he was going to fly away so and not pay so he had to spend a night in jail till the money was western unioned..And to boot they towed the renatl car to the pound and that cost him another 500.oo he was pretty pissed about it..He will never go to murtle beach again.
OK so I showed Mike the ideas and the name I picked "specs" was shot down unanimously..oh well I never said I was a logo expert.
After two hours of three of us beating our heads we came up with another name we all 'accepted'.
"Expressions" anybody like it?
Before I spend any amount of time making a logo for it etc.. he is going to check with the fictitios name place first to see if someone else already has it.

http://www.hallo-spass.de/gif/minigif/minigif038.gif
Don't know, JC, Expressions doesn't say anything about floors to my ear (even my good ear).
I'd guess you were selling flowers.
But then, I didn't like the last one either. Maybe I'm just not the right customer. :)

Well let's see, first I think he could use this one for the floor store, hmm, that was pure accident, and/or the headstones, anyhow, how about over the entrance "Abandon all hope ye who enter". Resurrections by Ere.....nah or better yet Moribund Enterprises (always wanted to use that one)
You know what? this is not working, I was bluffing.

JC,
I know I'm chiming in kinda late, but for what it's worth, I don't think age shatters the concept of "old world craftsmanship" - it is a style you are espousing, believing in only delivering the best quality on every job - you can believe in old world craftmanship without being old...I think as long as you are not claiming "years and years" of experience, there'd be no contradiction when they see you
Laurie
I hope it is not taken, I am not so concerned about not sounding like a floor store coz there is plenty of successful floor companies with names like that. Also there will still be a side part on the sign that say Stone&Tile and Hardwood or what ever to discibe it further.
I am not too partial to the old world theme, I also feel that I am going to be staying up and practicing more new methods then old methods and that is what I will be selling...or trying to sell..expoxies,ditra that kind of stuff.
kdzgon
01-31-2002, 09:02 AM
New methods while not forsaking old world respect for quality and craftmanship - no need to be mutually exclusive categories - craftmanship like the attention to detail that was the "norm" before our lives got so crazy, and where "quick" became more important than "right" ...
