"Edna" and "Albert" must have dropped out of the same school:D

I spent most every weekend for two summers Skydiving back when I was in my late teens. I let myself get a bit fat over the years and gave it up. Lately I've lost a few pounds and the need to jump out of perfectly good airplanes is starting to re-assert itself. I'll probably have to sit this summer out. I still have a way's to go before the scale says what it should. So I'll stick with Dart's and the Red Sox, at least for now.

Steve,

My skydiving stopped around about the same time the devine M discovered my kit. i.e. first trip back to parents house.

"Wossis?"

"My chute."

"Wocha shoot?"

"No sweetheart, chute."

"Wossit do?"

"Stops me from bouncing."

"Why do you bounce?"

"I don't, the chute stops me."

By this time the chute and rigging is forming a conga line around the room behind M.

"So how does it work?"

"Well it wont work like this."

"So show me."

"Take too long."

"Why won't you show me?"

"I need and aeroplane"

"Why?"

Extreme suspicion now creeping into innocent enquiries.

"To jump out of"

"While it's flying?"

"Well yes, otherwise I'd definitely bounce"

Not to be deflected,

"So how high are you when you jump?"

"Depends, sometimes 5, maybe 6 thousand meters if the weather is really good. half that if not."

"Not anymore!"

So Steve, somewhere in the UK is a twenty seven year old chute in pristine condition. Make me an offer:D

That airplane jumpin' is one of a short-list of things I've always wanted to do in this life. Came real close to an opportunity to jump outa one when I was inna Coast Guard once, but it was several hundred miles to the nearest land and I really wasn't lookin' forward to it. Airplane was fillin' up with smoke, though, and the choices were being narrowed rapidly. I can testify that not jumping out of an airplane can be really exciting, too.

Fell outa one into the water once, though. :D

Sorry Jeremy, but I already got a full rig. Two chutte's and a harness/container system, somewhere in the wilds of Southern Maine. Besides, would that chutte you had be one of those old, round leg breakers? I prefer tippy-toe landings.

If any of you are thinking about the sport, George Bush I made a jump after he left office. He was at least Seventy at the time. Way back when he was in the Navy, he was in a similar situation to Kelly's, only he had to jump. He decided that he wanted to try it under less taxing circumstances. So there ain't too many of you who can use the age excuse.

Actually, I have considered joining the local YMCA. I've finally broken down and resigned myself to needing to sign up for medical insurance. I plan on looking into private insurance during the week. I understand a lot of them offer discounts to gyms and such.

btw, I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes about three weeks ago. So far the costs haven't been too bad. Around 500 bucks for two Doctor's visits and a few blood tests. Another hundred or so for a month's worth of testing stuff. It's been amazingly easy to stay on a diet since I heard the doctor's speech on blindness and amputations;) A good friend of my dad's ignored his Diabetes years ago and first lost a toe, then the rest of his leg and finally, his life. I guess my most pressing hobby is making sure that s**t doesn't happen to me:D

Sorry to hear about the type II. I was diagnosed in 98 with the same. It sucks, but it could have been type I. Watch your carb intake and check your sugar often.

One other thing I do is take vitamins from Sportron International.

Thanks Mike, I think you did great ;) I don't worry too much about how I look as long as my horse looks good, so you are complimenting the right party! *BRAG ALERT* The pic is at his first show last fall, only three months after being "rescued" all skinny and beat up from a ranch herd, and we received a 2nd and a 3rd place in two classes. Thats a really great looking dressage horse.I dated a gal many years ago down wisconsin way that had been in dressage since she was about 2'6" tall. Her horse was over 20 years old at the time we dated and made Roy Rogers Trigger look retarded.Man that was a really smart horse.
She had a couple of walls full of ribbons and trophys and i mean entire walls FULL!!

I play games. Board games and miniature war games (think table top battles with lots of little troops and equipment). I'd like to play more historical (like Nepoleonic era) games, but don't really have access to any groups that play. So, instead I've got science fiction armies and some silly "fantasy" grunts.
There are a lot of really fantastic board games coming out of Germany over the past decade. Much smarter than the strd Milton Bradley or Parker Bros. fare. Check out

hobbies? hm. Well, one of my hobbies is cooking meals for my dogs.

Actually, I'm all about 'hobbies' - seems I've always got something going on. I tried that jumping out of a plane thingy - very interesting experience - but I've never wanted to do it again - no way, no how.

So, what's the difference between a hobby and a passtime? I'm not sure. Lot's of things are ways I passtime, and I do them so often, so does it then become a hobby or does it remain a passtime?

I'm confused...anyway - my main hobby has always been competitve sports of one kind or another. I was on a rowing team for years, fought competitively in martial arts for 7 years or so, weight training, and finally marathon and distance running...now, I cook liver for the 'kids' and take them on 2 hour walks everyday.
Mosaics were a hobby - now it's becoming more than that.

I paint - oil and mixed media. Graphic design and art design are other hobbies and of course there's history....reading, studying. Now, here we are again at the passtime thing....is reading a passtime or a hobby?

I've been thinking it would be fun to try fencing....

opiethetileman
07-22-2004, 07:55 PM
Hobbies would be Darts more like a sport of 13 years was once on the florida state team. Then would be Firearms alot of high powered stuff. And then I guess the most expensive hobbie would be the wife. 180 dollars a haircut I have to go work now

I used to fish a lot with my Dad but it lost something for me when he died. I hope to get the kids into it when they get a little bigger.

I play the guitar, and paint watercolors when I can find the time and that is not very oftern. I only hope I can still use by hands when i get out of this buisness.

Long ago I took a lot of photo's. (living in Alaska at the time)
I also like to read and learn about Northwest Native art.

I also like to sail.

MHI
07-25-2004, 09:10 PM
I used to fly RC too, both airplanes and heli's. Also drifted away. Don't have the time for it now.

I have a lot of hobbys, all are expensive. I haven't given up on any, but just not active in them right now. I do try to keep adding to my gun collection. I want to aquire some of them before they are outlawed. I like guns mostly for the history, and how there made. They are like works of art to me. Its also fun to take 'em out and blast away at inocent targets like pumpkins, and bowling pins, ect.

The problem is any hobby I have, takes time and money. I never seem to have both at the same time.:)

Hobbies? I used to have hobbies. I rode motorcycles, I launched rockets, I rode horses, I looked at the stars at night, I read science fiction, I built furniture, I did wood turning.

Then one day I said, boy I got all these tools, I got lots of time. I bet I could build my own house. Now I go to work and I go home and work on the house. If I read, its books about house building, if I visit web sites its sites about house topics. I like doing it, I know I will always be glad I did. But, I'll be glad when its done and I can have a hobby.

Your house will get built, but if you dont take at least 1 day per week to do something fun it will actually take longer to build.

Pet Therapy involves taking animals to various places like nursing homes, rehab locations, hospitals, hospice, mental retardation facilities, etc. Usually dogs are the animal of choice but I've also seen cats, rats, bunnies, birds, and horses. Far as I know nobody has ever used a skunk. Not surprisingly, they have very poor tempermants.

My Molly, (in the avatar) is a Delta Pet Partner certified therapy animal. She also got her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification this past Saturday. I have been doing pet therapy since 1990.

My main hobby is fishing, preferably with my son. Also enjoy hunting, camping, hiking, and home improvement. Newest interest is gardening.

There's nothing like 60 seconds of freefall to clear your head after a long week. I get grumpy if i miss more than 1 weekend of skydiving.

Far as I know nobody has ever used a skunk. Not surprisingly, they have very poor tempermants.

Neesie, believe it or not those little black and whites are sweeties and affectionate, seriously. We have seen them come up and sit on the deck...just hang out. One neighbor could not "shoo" this one furball away. Last summer he came every day during "beer thirty"...sat down next to their porch swing (where they were rocking) and stayed for about 30-40 minutes. Probably would have left sooner if the people had not been afraid to breathe. They just have that one teensy weensy little gland tempermant issue. :lol1:

As for hobbies..volunteer work and way too much remodeling recently. Used to be flying, hang gliding, diving, skiing and traveling. Doing different things keeps life interesting.

And Neesie, bless ya for the pet therapy. We had an Akita that loved to visit nursing homes. We still wonder who truly got the most out of those visits....the residents or us.

jdm,

lol I know what you mean. I still like the whole process of film and paper processing. There is a different feel about it. Not better or worse than computer photography, just different. The smell of fixer on your hands the next day is one of those things. Watching the printed image develop before your eyes, as the paper is being agitated in the tray is another. Using a medium format camera, with heavy lenses and a shutter curtain that goes "ka-flump!" is another.

Does it have a trailer? How much would he want for it? If the price is right I might make the trip. There are several on Ebay but they are a pretty good drive too. Have to do it before winter though; the only place I like snow and ice is in my cocktail glass.

ROFL, You And John Bridge Both ;)
I would have to check but i do not believe it has a trailer as they are pretty small and break down rather nicely.
I would also have to see if he actually WANTS to sell it (although I am guessing he will since he really has no use for it.
I'll report back to you after talking to him.
By the way, What are they worth?? (whats ebay have them at for example) I'm sure he would be willing to give you a good deal if he does sell it.... No fees are always a plus :)

Todd,
Nice car! I've been following F1 since 1983, and enjoy it more than NASCAR. My mom was born in Indianapolis, so we humor her for the Indianapolis 500 every year. Forget about Alonso. He's a lost cause...fairly arrogant as well. Even though I can't stand Raikkonen, I think he is better than Alonso.

Cheers.

Since we're talking hobbies AND Formula One racing, I thought I'd include my three-cents. I love board games! Not the Parker Bros./Milton Bradley sort, but the new generation of board games coming out of Europe over the past 10 years or so. Top amoung them is "Formula De'" (http://www.pixelpark.co.nz/family_games/formula_de.htm)
The basic game comes with two race tracks (double sided board) and about 10 cars. Additional boards representing all of the Formula One tracks around the world are available as "Expansion Packs".
And since this is a "tile" forum, I'll also plug my mostest favorite game at the moment, which is "Carcassone". It's a tile-based resource game where the board developes as the game is played. Most excellent fun! :D
Game on!,

They added 4 squares to a regular chess board and some new characters.....the baddest character makes mincemeat outa them pawns and stands .....hmm how tall is a dragon anyways ;)

Scott, I think your right, Alonso's been getting some breaks...Schumakers the best in my opinion and Kimmi's probobly a close second.........sure wish Speed would show a little mettle. what ever happened to the Americans that could drive F1 LOL

Thanks Todd, but I'm a pureist when it comes to classic games like Chess and Mumblety-Peg. I had no idea that Gary Gygax was still hobbling along out there in Lake Geneva??? How long do you suppose he'll continue to strangle the "Dungeons & Dragons" golden goose? I think he's coming up on 30 years now?!?
I don't know where you can find Carcassone on-line but most any independant game store will be able to order it for you. There is now available a set of "Carcassone" which includes most of the expansions to the game, which I usually enjoy playing with. Of the variations of "Carcassone", I do NOT enjoy "Hunters and Gatherers" and "City" is a fun alternative for two players. I like nearly everything from Rio Grande Games (http://www.riograndegames.com/) , the makers of "Carcassone". "Puerto Rico" is another very popular game by this company.
Another great boardgame company is Mayfair Games (http://www.mayfairgames.com/) , who produce the "Settlers of Catan" line of games.
And if you've got a group of small kids who enjoy imagination, I absolutely love "Once Upon a Time", from the Atlas Games Company (http://www.atlas-games.com/onceuponatime/) . It's a storytelling card game where each card has some facet of a story (dangerous deed, talking animal, angry peasant, time of day, etc.) and the object is to seemlessly incorporate all of your cards into the story that everyone is telling cooperatively. And the rule for taking the turn away from somebody when they misplay a story element is to politely interupt and say, "That's not the way it happened, Silly! It happened like this!" :D The cards are sized for small hands but I've been in groups of adults that had a blast playing it over beer and pretzels too.
Atlas Games also makes "Lunch Money" which is also lots of fun over beer and pretzels but not so suitable for the kiddies. :drevil:
Have fun all!,

When I have time for models, I like the fantasy line from Rackham (http://www.rackham.fr/) . I'm working on a Goblin army, but it's been on hold for about 6 months now. After a day of heavy physical labor, I really like to hunker down with a teeny tiny paint brush and focus all of my attention on little details like these. I'm not an exceptional painter, nor do I try to be, but I enjoy it none-the-less. :)

Todd,
I like the second track better for the little jag just before/after the pits. I think with the single straight-away you've got good opportunity for speed but the majority of turns keeps the race from becoming a sprint. How about making the track two-tiered with the jag (track 2) on higher ground and the straight-away (track 1)running through a parrallel depression. Not practical in the real world of racing but it would give you some versatility??
Nice lay-outs, both. :tup2:

Found another great board game recently, though it's going to be very hard to find anywhere but the internet. "Railroad Tycoon, the boardgame" by Eagle Games is a game for up to six players and the game board is 3'x4' (so have a large table). Unfortuneately, Eagle Games has gone belly-up due to overly ambitious license purchasing and the game is currently out-of-print. One source that I like to use for finding obscure games is Fun Again Games (www.funagaingames.com) and they had it in stock this past week (that's how I got my copy).
There are a lot of railroad games out there but this one seems to be a very enjoyable balance of complexity and entertainment.

Todd, do those cars have like a nylon blade on the bottom that ride in the track with wire brush like things on each side of it? (technical term)

tileguytodd
10-01-2006, 05:13 AM
Raymond, yes they have self centering guide blades and Braided Pickups (quickchange) for picking up electrical current.
These cars utilize a Digital Command Control Module that allows you push button control to change lanes.
The module has a sensor and there is a sensor track before each lane change piece of track.
You push the button and the sensors act together so you can change lanes from outside to pass on the inside or from the inside to pass on the outside depending on the configuration of the turnout track piece.

I am starting a dialogue now with a German manufacturer of Digital components to incorporate sound chips & Miniature speakers into these cars.

Imagine a digital recording of your favorite car and having the engine sounds synchronized to your throttle including gear shifting etc.

Now all you need is the smell of burning rubber and some exhaust fumes and it will be almost like being in the pits at a real race ;)

It may be a few years before this sound option is realized..........but, I'm working on it

Raymond S
10-01-2006, 09:39 PM
Thought that was so Todd, when you first posted about 'em. Had some many years ago, a 69 Dodge Charger and a 69 Mustang (not near as high-falutin' as some of them foreign jobs you got). All that lane changin stuff sounds pretty cool, never heard of that. When I was a kid, I once went into a store, like in a strip mall, and the entire store was racetracks, several different ones, and there were crowds of people at every one, cheerin' and hollerin. I loved that place, but I don't think it stayed in business too long.

May still have that Mustang in a box around here somewhere. Seems like I saw it awhile back.

If its an Old Shelby cobra you may have a collectors piece if its in good shape.
Ive seen the Cobra go for over 300.00 on ebay............that would be enough to buy you a New Digital lane change set (about 270.00) And some plywood to put it on ;)
That Charger may bring you enough to add several more track pieces and another pair of cars...............in good shape it may bring another couple hundred ;)

Back in the late 60's and through the mid 70's Slot car centers were all over.
They slowly faded in popularity here until only a few remained. The Hobby has remained a steady force over in Great Britain.

Only in the last 7 or 8 years has the hobby started to re-emerge over here and at present it is the fastest growing hobby overtaking RC (which is now seeing a decline in poularity)

I guess all of us Middle aged guys need toys and this one fits the bill for a good many because
#1 - most guys love cars and racing

Then a Full Bath remodel with Handicap Shower + extra's. Plenty to keep me out of trouble through january since i'll take a break between Motels of a couple weeks.( I turned down a differant Motel Steam Room to get those 2 weeks off. Too many liability issues and a general contractor on the hook for the warranty who wants it redone cheap.......didnt want to work with them at all and the great thing is this..I do not have to!! :D

Hopefully I'll get a good jump on this track through Winter so that next year I can get back to the trains for the upper shelf :)

As to Weather.......yep , we got some snow.......about an inch stuck on the ground.......it wont last though....cold for a few days then we'll get our 2 week Indian Summer.............around Halloween we'll get pounded with a Snow storm..........pretty normal routine around here :)

Moving along & coming down the back straightaway ive got 1.5" of width to try to gain a little feeling of depth to the backdrop..........In order to do this i'll need multiple layers to give that industry in the background a feeling of distance from the track (we call it forcing perspective)
Heres the Plan
Build a wooden fence give it a peeling paint kinda look, slap some old ad posters on it and use sections intermixed with building flats (partial buildings).
I chose concession stands.A few haybales for sitting on will be scattered around for the spectators.
I will also add a few landscaping shrubs, Light poles and a bit of chainlink fence over the racewall.
Here is 1 section of fence with my special peeling paint technique employed
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f74/Tileguy86/Fence7.jpg

And here is that same fencing and the concession stand start sitting along the backdrop.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f74/Tileguy86/backdropfence005.jpg

And last night i finished up the final weathering and the 1st concession stand.
This section is now ready for placement

Todd,

Well thanks Shaughn.........I'm not really putting forth my best effort on this since its a slot track where damage can always happen due to out of control DRIVERS :D
But........I'm having fun doing this small stuff.

Hmmm Neon Beer sign...........I know there are some cool neon sign out there from this place. Some are even animated (bowling alley motel/hotel flashing etc. They even have the welcome to fabulous las vegas sign. No beer signs I'm afraid...........A few bar & longe signs though.

Todd,
I was thinking more along the lines of bent wire painted with a "neon" color to simulate a sign. I think it might be a lot more fun to make that plugging in something "store bought", don't you? :)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....NO :D

Consider............real life that window sign iswhat maybe 12 x 16" perhaps 16" x 20" (sound about right?? )
Try bending wire to say Beer on tap in a 1/2" x 3/4" area.(that would be equal to 16" x 24" using 1/32 scale measurements............If you can do it, I'll buy the paint .........GLADLY........ ;)

I also Added a working Pit Lane and an additional Lane changer along the back straight......And painted the track. I have alot of weathering to complete on the trackwork yet however.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f74/Tileguy86/Racetrack11.jpg

I also added a couple of New Vintage cars to the Roster.......I need to sloder in a couple of digital chips and do a lube job & motor break in but these should look nice out on the circuit.

Soon the wiring and computer interface will be completed which will give me added Power, independently power lane changers for faster responses, a Full computer race management system that keeps track of individual cars race times and Lap times etc, and finally lighting around the track for night racing ( I do have a few cars that are lighting equipped with working head & tail lights)

So, this has been keeping me a bit busy also............Hey, I love my Job, but ive pretty much been LIVING my Job for nearly 5 years.......time to find some Balance........There IS more to life than Tile.........I think??? :D

DH got back from riding his bike and I helped him put away the telescope. You know, the one that has it's own trailer. He's going to test drive/ride :uhh: a bike at a dealership in Ft. Myers. His new bike is going to cost more than my current car did. Boys and their toys.
