I've demo'd the shower and wondered if there was something I could do with the acrylic shower pan I've removed to allow tile to adhere to it? The pan is in great shape structurally but the finish is scratched up.

Welcome to the forum, Lynda.

Getting thinset to stick to the pan isn't the issue. It's the relatively large amount of flexing that goes on from stepping in a hollow pan and differential expansion and contraction rates between the pan and tile material that can cause cracks and delamination.

These types of pans can sometimes be polished back up if there's a decent enough gloss layer left. Or you may want to consider replacing it with a like pan as they aren't too spendy usually. Or we can help guide you through replacing it with a real mud pan and tile it like we have countless times before.
