Andy Lundberg of Felker sent me this, and just in a nick of time, too. Seems we're gettin' a powerful lot of Yankees hangin' round this place. Now we get to find out who they is -- I mean are. :D

Please report your score so we can classify ya. ;)

Canadians can participate too. Just leave off all the "eh" stuff, eh?

Sorry, but Brits just can't be Yankees. ;)

Interesting....

Couldn't really figure out what the true discriminators were. Tried three times, changing a couple of answers that could have gone either way. Twice, I was very slightly "Dixie" and once very slightly "Yankee."

I guess that means my left coast upbringing is still in charge!!;)

:):)

John Bridge
02-23-2004, 02:55 PM
My Left Coast upbringing too, Howard. I only did it once, and I came up 50/50. So 22 years in Texas had not completely eradicated my once perfect West Coast dialect. ;)

I'm curious to know whether Flatfloor can even pass the test. :D

I got 55% dixie. I have to say I am disapointed. I was raised in the mountants of North Carolina and have lived in Texas for 20 years. I think its bogus.

What is the name of a dish made from thinly sliced cabbage? ('slaw).

What is the plural of y'all? (all y'all).

...an tell me why yore leavin me :D

Entire song

Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans,
Go out to the car and change the tire,
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers,
And boil me up another pot of tea,
Then put another log on the fire,
And come and tell me why you're leaving me.

Don't I let you wash the car on Sundays?
Don't I warn you when you're gettin' fat?
Ain't I gonna take you fishin' with me someday"
A man cain't love a woman more than that!
Ain't I always nice to your kid sister?
Don't I take her drivin' every night?
So sit here at my feet, cause I love you when you're sweet,
And you know it ain't feminine to fight.

Ah'm a' fixin': Ah'm a fixen ta go ta the house.
He's a' fixin': He's a' fixin' ta go ta town. (Also she's a' fixin')
It's a' fixin': It's a' fixin' ta rain. (In North Carolina this would always be: "Hit's a'fixin ta rain".

Past tense the a' is optional:
He was a' fixin' ta fix his car
or
He was fixin' ta fix his car
or even
He were fixin' ta fix his car

The future tense in fromed with the helper verb "gonna'be"
I'm a' gonna'be fixin' to go to work real-soon-now.

The infinitive is "ta be a' fixin". -- Ta be a'fixin' ta get out'a bed and ta lay there jist a bit longer, is the finest part a' the day.

There, its all done but the finishin' up an' I gotta' be fixin' ta git ta bed.

Berry good Q8. :D Maybe I better retract that English statement. How about we compromise...git some our friends from Winnipeg or Moose Jaw to translate dat test into Canadian....certainly be a whole lot better than what we got now, don't cha no.

And then there's genel, showin off and all, how he still members to conjugate dem verbs. I'm relatively impressed, course fixin' purdy easy one ta do, eh.? :shades:

John Bridge
02-25-2004, 06:34 AM
We could translate the test into whose English? Derek, for example, did very well on the test as is. If it were in English, he'd probably flunk if Jacqui didn't help him cheat. :D

I'll tell you what we need. We need an Australian. Now there's a dialect for ya. ;)

A whole book has been available for years that constitutes such a test:

"Fraffly Strine Everything" by Afferbeck Lauder. Fabulous reading:D

Bugman
02-25-2004, 08:26 AM
Loved the test!!:D I passed it on to several others and the results have been interesting.

I spent my first 34 years in "Southern" Wisconsin and moved to South Carolina in 1978. I amazed my southern coworkers when I ate grits and cornbread right from the git-go. Funny thing is, when I go back to Wisconsin everyone thinks I have a southern accent. I still get people in SC wondering where I am from. ;)

BTW, my score was: 43% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

Clyde,

I think South Carolina (and North Carolina) must be beginning to sound more mid-Western or Western. I know when I've been around your area, I haven't noticed the distinct Carolina dialect I used to hear when I was in the Army playing war games there back in the sixties. Back then I could hardly understand anyone. :)

It's like Houston. When I arrived here 22 years ago I was greeted by bumper stickers calling me a Yankee and telling me to get the hell out. It made no difference that I was not a Yankee and never had been.

The most popular sticker was "Native Texan and Proud of It." Now you're hard pressed to find a native Houstonian as I remember them. They are here, of course, but they are my children and the children of other "transplants." The place has become so cosmopolitan you'd hardly know it's the "South." :)

I can talk like Bubba if I have to, though. :D

Mike2
02-25-2004, 02:42 PM
I gis new yew were settin' me up Q8... I gis new it. :bang:

But I went ahead and did it anyways. So I go's ou'ta Amazon, search on this Afferbeck guy, and sure 'nough, git a hit. So far, OK. So he's got a few books for sale. Now here's one of the reviews on his latest book, Fraffly well spoken: how to speak the language of London's West End.

Quote: "Wommer snoppy withot it - wonker nurnley sair this isser chommin bookin effry wear. Femmer sessair, sir tragedy its otter print. wotter biter re-print . I swear to God, somebody actually wrote that, as a review! Now I don't think you'r gonna find any Brit, not even one in Q8 wift mad-camel disease who's gonna understand what the hey all that means. :shades:

Bugman
02-25-2004, 03:18 PM
John,

South Carolina is definitely a land of contrast. I travel throughout the state and there are some real distinct dialects in different areas. It's very interesting.

Where were you playing war games in the 60's? Ft. Jackson?? Lots of people only know SC from Ft. Jackson experience or Parris Island. Not neccessarily the most pleasant memories for some;)

John Bridge
02-25-2004, 03:25 PM
No, I was in the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga., the outfit that later became the 1st Air Cavalry Div. and shipped out to Viet Nam. We had no "headquarters" as it were in the Carolinas. We sort of roamed all through the back country. I can't remember the names of the little towns, but they were places like Pendleton. I remember passing through Monroe, N.C. at one point. Spent months in the area. I was a truck driver at the time. Got around quite a bit. :)
