fieldstone shower

Any experience in this group using fieldstone for a shower walls? The irregular surface even when properly sealed will make it more difficult to keep clean, but the aesthetics of it make it appealing. Any comments?

I have never installed fieldstone in a shower, and for practicality sake advise against it. Many people fail to properly maintain a tiled shower, let alone fieldstone, sealed or not!

Pretty much what I thought you would say. How about a compromise with slate tile? what do you think? I'm trying to get a rustic appearance in an 1820 farmhouse.

Back to your shower. Slate is a touchy subject for a shower as well. There are many textured porcelain tile look a likes that would be much more practical, more forgiving, and easier to maintain. Why invite a problem into the equation?

If you do elect to choose slate, my understanding is vermont slate would be your safest bet. Be sure to properly seal it after install, and maintain with a nuetral cleaner.

I agree with John K. If you have to use real slate, Vermont Slate is the ticket.

It’s still a real stone, though.

Look into some of the stone look-alikes, as John B suggests. There are some Porcelains that you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. ;)

i've read your comments on the why nots. what if it was used as a 3/4 wall in a 2nd, not often used shower? would it make it possible if used less often?
