I'm new to this board and as seems ususal for me, my question doesn't quite fit the category.

My kitchen floor is brick and I believe the 'grout' is prob a mortar. I am in the process of removing the lacquer in ordear to refinish. It was finished at different times according to the previous owner and half of the area (kitchen/eating) was dark grey grout and half light gray; and of course the bricks were also different. Anyway, I would like some kind of finish that wouldn't darken as the lacquer/sealer did. I like the lighter effect of the unfinished brick/grout; is there a finish that would leave a matte finish but not darken as regular sealers seem to. Or can I stain the grout a lighter color before refinishing?

Any help or other ideas appreciated. :bow:

You'll be better off on our restoration board, and I'll move us there. You'll find it. :)

I will venture to say that all topical finishes will eventually "yellow" or darken as they age. Let's see if we can get some pro help here. ;)

While I'm waiting for the 'pro' advice, I have another sealer question only this one is for a small painted table top. What kind of sealer stays clear? On another project, I tried brush on polyurethane; it yellowed big time; I still need to strip that and redo (it is very noticeable). I thot it might be because the polyu had overwintered in the garage, so I threw it out. Another small project I used the spray version that said 'clear' and it yellowed also ... immediately. This was a white background and the other one was beige; otherwise, I prob would not have noticed. Is there anything that won't yellow? I'm doing another small table and want to seal the top with a matte finish. Thanks for any advice you can give.
