Any suggestions on how to speed things back up? I seem to be having a heck of a time of getting to post things. Much harder on sites that have these dang pop-up ads.

Thanks for not having them John! :)

It seems like I keep losing connection with the internet. I have tried running Speeddisk but can't seem to clean things up. Keep running into lost clusters.

I don't want to reboot my whole system and lose all my links and things. Argh!!

Any help?

That same problem comes and goes with me. At times it is very discouraging and I just go away to keep from destroying something.

I complained to my ISP and they were kind enough to walk me thru some setting changes that seemed to help. Seems that AOL had placed some needless shit in my cookie can that was slowing everything down. We deleted all that crap.

Things still get very slow but not as often, when this happens I just hang up and re-dial. Not all connections are created equal it seems. A re-dial almost always fixes the problem.

My biggest complaint is the frequent dis-connects while I'm idling for some reason. They set me up to sample my email every few seconds to keep me on line longer but don't know that it helped.

So is that what you meant by tonights comment at FI.com?

That's it Bud!

I'm on a DSL connection, I try to post something or hit reply and the thing just sits there. It seems to help if I put the computer in to standby and then come on again.

Some sites seem to be worse than others and the ones with pop-up ads seem to be the biggest problem.

Flooring Installer doesn't have that much but I still have problems there. I'm really having problems on my email sites and fantasy sports (CBS Sportsline) sites.

I've flushed the cookies and temporary internet files but it doesn't seem to help. My ISP help service must be manned by minimum wage kids because they don't seem to have any answers.

I'm about ready to reload my whole system and hopefully that will flush whatever problems may be caused by my end of things. I just want to know if it is really my computer or is it outside sources.

I can click on John's site and it pops right up, those others it is like a flip of a coin if it is going to come up or not.

Well now before you go doing anything drastic, sometimes it's the forum itself that is slow. It has a lot to do with how busy the host server might be. And then on sites that use the software I do (quite a few) there is the database server to contend with, also.

A better indicator of how fast you are would be downloading files. Things should hustle right along with DSL. If that's not happening, then I would start bitching at the provider and looking into my system and hardware.

I have my biggest problems right here. Not too often but when it is bad this place is the worst. But I'm on dial up.

I frequently have this site and another builder forum site up at the same time (sometimes even simultaneously) and this site loads substantially faster as a rule.

I still have trouble with the site not responding properly when I try to change pages or whatever: sometimes works fine, sometimes just spins its wheels until I hit Stop and retry whatever I tried to do. This problem began when John changed to the "new" site, and has gotten no better nor worse. But it is irritating, mostly because it didn't used to do that. Least not to moi.

I had slow problems with my dial-up. until I bought a real good modem. like a u.s. robotics modem 56K. I had a cheap one and payed like $10.00 for it and it was crapy. But now I have a common speed of 45000-53000 bps not the fastest but hay, better then a 28000 bps.
Note: keep your system close to the outlet as poss. get a good "phone cable" to link your modem to the jack-outlet,also try "window washer" an internet cleaning software it can get rid of junk that could be slooowwwiiinnnggg you down.

It could very well be the server/host, and how busy they are from time to time. I myself have problems occasionally.

I've noticed, however, that every board I visit that uses this board is slow from time to time. The software developers say that it's a very "server intensive" package.

Please be patient. It's a good product. Does everything except wipe your a, I mean, it's a very good product. :)

I find that sometimes in the evening my connection slows down and some sites won’t even load. I like to collect my mail first thing in the morning it comes in quicker.
I also find that site’s that are slow in the evening usually work fine in the morning, probably because there aren’t so many people logged in to the sever. http://www.data-techniques.net/cwm/contrib/dday/shocked.gif

It's about 5:30pm right now. This is the time of day for me that this thing seems to work the best. As the evening wears on the load times get slower seems like. But I'll tell what! This thing is "right now" the slowest I've seen it in a long time.

Why is that do you suppose?

Bud,

I truthfully have to think it's your connection or your gear. Maybe it's time to retire the old dinosaur and step into the 21st Century.
