The Best Home Builder in Texas
(Home)John P. Bridge
I've said some things about builders that, while not disparaging, are not exactly flattering. I should make it clear that all builders do not fall into the same stereotype, and that there are some exceptional ones (hard to find as they may be.)
Most of the tile and marble work we do in Houston is remodeling, i.e., kitchen floors, shower rebuilding, etc., and I act as my own contractor. We do, however, subcontract the tile work on high-end custom homes for one builder only.
As a rule, I quit working for builders when I determined that most of them were flakey. Then about four years ago a builder called me and enticed me to look at a house he was building. His name was Gary Bumpass, and the house impressed me. It was a show home, being built for Home magazine. I could easily tell that things were being done right. The framing was straight and square, and the drywall work that was in progress was being done in an exceptional manner. Gary told me the tile work would be done on mud -- all the floors would be floated as well as the shower and tub surround walls. He wanted quality workmanship and was willing to pay for it. He had me.
I've been doing custom homes for G.A. Bumpass Builders, Inc. ever since. As I write this I'm working on one and will have another waiting for me when I'm finished. Gary builds big homes, the smallest about 5,000 square feet. We've done homes over 10,000 square feet and have one coming up that is about 18,000.
No matter how big the house, each phase is completed in a quality manner meant to last. Bumpass does things that no other builder in Houston does.
Now you might think this is just an unabashed case of sucking up, but I'll tell you I don't need Gary that badly. In fact, although I appreciate the favor Gary has shown me, I've tried to quit and return to full-time remodeling, but he won't let me. I think we've become friends in a way (while maintaining a healthy business relationship). We respect one another, and I don't need to butter him up.
In any case, if you live in Southeast Texas and have more money than you know what to do with and want a new (or newly remodeled) home that is larger than you can possibly inhabit and more lavish than any your friends, neighbors or relatives might own and you want it properly built, you need to get hold of Gary Bumpass. You should also call him if you just want a nice, down to earth, well-built custom home.
A couple years ago, Gary's brother John became a partner in the firm. Through the years I've done a lot of work for John and know him to be a reputable guy -- a nice guy as well. You can depend on John to see that your dream house is built with the utmost of care and professional efficiency. The name of the company is now Bumpass Builders.
(Can you believe it? As prominent as Gary and John are, they don't have a dot com.)
