Grab Bars in Ceramic Tile Showers

There comes a time when all of us get a little unsteady while using the shower or tub and feel the need for something to hang onto. And, of course, there are those whose afflictions or handicaps limit their agility. Heavy-duty grab bars, while not a cure-all, are the obvious answer.
In the past, choices in grab bars were few, but that is no longer the case. Besides the traditional stainless steel (institutional-looking) type of bar, decorator bars are available in a variety of colors and shapes. A good selection is available at such places as Home Depot, Lowes and other home centers.

Although my aim is altruistic, there is an ulterior motive. I know that someday either you or one of your friends or family members will require the paid services of someone like me. Warning: Grab bars must support a considerable load stress ( much more than your body weight). If your shower has nothing more than sheetrock behind the tiles, it may not be sturdy enough to support a grab bar. This is not usually the case, but it's a possibility. I'm telling you this now because I don't want to disappoint you later. And I would not want you to think I'm merely trying to sell you on building a new shower. Believe me, that is not the case. I want your business, but not as much as I want your goodwill.
Warning No. 2: If you allow me to sit down at your kitchen table, I will talk your ears off for at least half an hour about every subject under the sun, and I might even end up selling you on the idea of a new shower.
